New trade body launches to champion energy storage in the UK
A powerful new force is entering the UK energy sector with the launch of the Energy Storage Association (UK), dedicated to accelerating the adoption of energy storage technologies as a cornerstone of a resilient, affordable, and net-zero energy system. Storage technologies are fundamental to achieving net zero, as they can store renewable energy on windy or sunny days and allow that energy to be used when needed. It has critical applications in electricity, industry, heat and transport.
A study by Imperial College found that effective energy storage could save the UK between £500m and £3.5bn per year, whereas at present, we have the cost of energy curtailment adding anywhere between £400m and £920m to energy bills in 2024
Storage technology must play a vital role in the 2030 Clean Power Plan. £25 billion of private investment can be expected in electrical batteries over the next 5 years, while heat pumps installed in people’s homes can make use of thermal storage. There are also numerous proposals for >£1 billion long-duration energy storage facilities across the UK.
As the leading trade body for energy storage, the Energy Storage Association (UK) aims to drive innovation, investment, and policy that unlock the full potential of storage solutions, ensuring a cleaner, more equitable energy future. It will represent all forms of energy storage in our homes, buildings and on our energy grids, including but not limited to electrical batteries, thermal storage, pumped hydro storage and hydrogen-based storage from green hydrogen and green ammonia.
Founding members of the Energy Storage Association (UK) and supporting the launch of the new trade body are: GivEnergy Limited, Sunsynk, Powervault, Octopus Energy, Keele University and Durham University.
The push toward net zero demands scalable solutions that strengthen energy security, enhance grid flexibility, and optimise renewable generation. The Energy Storage Association (UK) will work closely with industry leaders, policymakers, and communities to drive forward the innovation and investment needed to make energy storage a central pillar of the UK energy strategy.
“Our vision is simple: we see a world where energy storage is allowed to lower consumer costs, stabilise the grid and accelerate the transition to net zero,” said Jason Howlett, Founder and Interim CEO of Energy Storage Association (UK). “Energy storage is not just a technical solution, it’s a necessity for delivering dependable, affordable, clean energy from renewable sources where and when it’s needed most.”
“I am excited to be chairing the newly launched Energy Storage Association, championing a sector that is pivotal to delivering the UK’s net-zero ambitions. Energy storage is not just critical for balancing and stabilising a renewable-powered grid - it is also one of the biggest opportunities for investment, innovation, and leadership in the global transition to clean energy” said Baroness Luciana Berger, Chair.
